The Undy 5000 is a 5K (5000 meter) walk/run to raise awareness and support for colon cancer put on by the Colon Cancer Alliance. People running the race are asked to wear things that will bring attention to their bottom, whether that means wearing underwear over your clothing, wearing tutus, or anything else you can think of. But they also remind you to dress appropriately because people of all ages will be in attendance. I think it sounds like a lot of fun!
The National Lung Cancer Partnership has a list of upcoming events around the country depending upon where you live. They have a lot of walkathons, runs, golf tournaments, etc. To help this cause, find out what events are near you.
St. Baldricks: Shaving the Way to Conquer Kid’s Cancer
If you are really dedicated to the cause, here’s an awesome way to give of yourself for cancer. St. Baldricks is an organization that promotes the shaving off of one’s hair in order to earn money to help fight cancer in kids. When someone shaves their head, friends and family and others donate money to the cause. It is a very successful organization and you don’t necessarily have to shave your head to volunteer.
Susan G. Komen: Race for the Cure
This is a race to raise money to help the cause of breast cancer. It helps to fund many organizations and their breast cancer programs. The event also raises awareness of women’s breast health. If you live in Utah, there will be one in Salt Lake City on May 8, 2010. To find more information about it, go to www.komenslc.org. If you live elsewhere go to http://ww5.komen.org/findarace.aspx to find a race close to you.
For more information on other breast cancer events you can go to http://www.networkofstrength.org/getinvolved/.
Bone Marrow Donation
For those of you who want to give more than just your money, you can donate your bone marrow to those who have certain cancers or diseases such as leukemia, lymphoma, etc. This is a great opportunity to help save a life and really make a difference for someone with cancer. There are a lot of websites that you can check out to get involved, but the two that seemed the best for me were http://www.marrow.org and http://www.dkmsamericas.org/transplant-centers.
Even more…
The American Cancer Society also has a webpage with even more ways that you can get involved in the cause. I personally like the Coaches vs. Cancer idea. For even more ways to help and to find events near you, look at http://www.cancer.org/docroot/par/par_0.asp.
